Dr. Trinh
Meet Dr. Trinh — orthopedic doctor, Ho Chi Minh City
Medical doctor, orthopedic specialty, based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Who he is
Dr. Trinh is a medical doctor working in orthopedics — bones, joints and the spine — based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Most of the people he sees each day are not new to their pain. They have had a knee, a back, a shoulder or a neck hurting for months or years, have already been to several places, and still do not have a clear answer about what is actually wrong.
His work is to find that answer first, explain it in plain words, and only then talk about treatment.
His medical training
Dr. Trinh has completed eleven years of medical education and is currently enrolled in Level-1 Specialist (CK1) training in Vietnam.

Formerly worked at the Trauma & Orthopaedic decompression unit of Cho Ray Hospital — located at Buu Dien Hospital.
What he treats
Knee pain and knee osteoarthritis — knees that ache on stairs, stiffen in the morning, swell after walking, or feel like they might give way.
Gout — the sudden hot, red, swollen big toe or ankle that arrives at night with no injury behind it.
Back pain — including low back pain that travels down into the buttock and leg.
Herniated disc — back or neck pain with numbness, tingling or weakness in a limb.
Shoulder pain — a shoulder that cannot be lifted to comb hair or reach a shelf, or that wakes you when you roll onto it.
Neck pain — including neck pain that comes with numb hands or a weak arm.
Who should come and see him
You are the right person to come if any of this sounds like you or your parent:
The pain has lasted more than two weeks and is not improving.
You have been to several places, taken several kinds of medicine, and still do not know the name of what you have.
Someone told your mother or father that it is "just old age" and nothing can be done.
You have X-ray or MRI films already, but nobody has sat down and shown you what is on them.
Somebody has suggested surgery and you want a second opinion before you agree.

Pain that comes with swelling, heat and redness — or with numbness and leg weakness — should be examined right away rather than waited out.
Why patients from Cambodia come to him
The price is in US dollars and you hear it before anything is done. A consultation is 10 USD as a full package. If a procedure is suggested, the price is stated in US dollars before you decide.
You do not transfer money in advance. You meet the doctor first and pay afterwards at the reception counter.
Khmer language support. Messenger is answered by a Khmer speaker, and a Khmer-speaking interpreter is arranged for the consultation.
It is one overland trip. Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City through the Bavet – Moc Bai border crossing. See the travel guide for patients coming from Cambodia.
How a visit with him actually goes
1. You message first. Send a message on Messenger before you travel so the visit can be arranged and a Khmer interpreter is there on the day.
2.
The doctor examines you in person. He asks how the pain behaves, moves the joint himself, and checks the signs with his hands. This part is not skipped.
3.
He goes through your films with you. He puts the X-ray or MRI up, points at it, and tells you what he is looking at and what it means for your knee or your back.
4.
He tells you the cost before you decide. What he suggests, and what it costs in US dollars. You are allowed to say no, think about it, or go home and come back.
5.
You pay at the counter afterwards. Never in advance, never before you have met him.

* The consultation price covers the doctor's examination, his advice, and reading the imaging you bring with you. The final price of any treatment depends on your actual case after the doctor has examined you.
What he does not promise
The doctor does not promise a fixed result. Joints and spines behave differently from one person to the next, and any honest doctor will tell you the same thing.

What he does commit to is this: a proper examination, a plain explanation of what your films show, and a clear price before you decide anything. Many patients feel less pain after treatment, and pain often improves — and the doctor will re-examine you to assess how you have responded rather than telling you in advance how it will turn out.
