Does your parent's leg go numb to the point of barely being able to walk?
Hearing your parent groan from pain running from the back down to the leg, leg going numb — but they won't tell you, afraid of worrying you, or afraid of needing spine surgery. Please keep reading; you'll understand what to do next to help them.
Does this sound like your parent?
🏍️
Can only ride a motorbike for 10 minutes before having to stop and rest — the leg goes badly numb.
⚡
Pain like an electric shock shoots from the back down to the buttock, thigh, and calf.
🤧
One cough or sneeze and the pain shoots down the leg right away.
🚶
Walks a short way, legs go weak, has to sit and rest frequently.
🛏️
Can't find a comfortable sleeping position — hurts every time they turn over.
🤐
Afraid to tell their children the leg is starting to weaken — afraid of needing spine surgery.

If your parent shows even a few of these signs, don't wait — this kind of leg numbness doesn't go away on its own; it needs a proper exam by a doctor.
Why does coining (cạo gió) or traditional medicine still leave the leg numb?
Your parent may have gone to a Kru Khmer for coining — called "khyâl cap" (wind-catching) — and felt better for a while. That's normal. But when the spinal disc has already slipped and is pressing on a nerve, coining alone can't reach the root cause. A specialist exam and an X-ray/scan are needed first to know exactly how far the disc has slipped and which nerve it presses.

The doctor examines first, then tells you plainly what to do next. No promise of instant relief or a fixed outcome — only a proper exam so you know the right next step.
Afraid of being scammed?
Facebook is full of countless ads selling medicine that promises "take it for 3 days and the pain is gone" — making people afraid, unwilling to trust any doctor. We understand that fear.
This is a real doctor, working at a real hospital in Ho Chi Minh City. Prices are written down clearly in advance — nothing hidden.
No need to transfer money in advance — pay at the reception counter, after you've met the doctor.
If a herniated disc compressing the nerve is left untreated, does it get worse over time?
Based on general medical knowledge, a nerve compressed for a long time usually doesn't recover on its own. If examined late, the leg can become weaker and the walking distance shorter. Examining early is generally easier to treat — results vary case by case, decided only after an actual exam.

Frequently asked questions
Q: Can I see the doctor before paying? A: Yes — you meet the doctor first, they examine you, then tell you the clear price; you pay at the reception counter.
Q: Does a herniated disc always need surgery? A: No — the doctor needs to examine and review an X-ray/scan first to know the level and the right treatment. Most cases can be treated without surgery, but it depends on the individual case.
Q: What should I bring? A: Please bring old X-rays or test results (if any) so the doctor can review them quickly and more clearly.
